If veganism and carnism are viewed as opposite ends of a spectrum, then I think the term, "reducetarian," best describes someone who falls in between. Vegan is the highest degree of reducetarian. If more people are calling themselves "flexitarian," then that is a step in the right direction, even if that term has become a euphemism for "moderation," which is meaningless in the context of the standard American diet. In other words, "flexitarian" is the smallest step up from "carnist" on the reducetarian spectrum. Meat reduction is the common ground for the varying degrees of movement away from carnism. In terms of food and diet, "vegan" refers to what is excluded, whereas "whole food, plant-based" refers to what is included.
